Develop and enhance models and algorithms to improve Flexport’s fulfillment operations

The opportunity:

Flexport is looking for a creative, technically-minded Staff Data Scientist who is excited about solving challenging problems in fulfillment and logistics. We provide ecommerce merchants a full range of "port-to-porch" logistics solutions. This role focuses on building automated decision-making processes that ensure that we meet or exceed the expectations of our merchants for fulfillment speed and reliability, while growing the network in a cost-efficient way.

Data is at the heart of our business, and as a Data Scientist, you will develop first-in-class science products to make fulfillment easy and efficient for our merchants. In collaboration with multidisciplinary product, engineering, and business/operations teams, you will apply advanced Operations Research (OR) and Machine Learning (ML) methods to deliver data-driven insights and automated decision-making solutions in Flexport’s fulfillment products.

Our business, product, and engineering teams collaborate closely with our Data Scientists to share domain knowledge, test hypotheses at scale, and develop promising solutions that can be quickly and widely deployed. We are passionate about providing effortlessly accessible intelligence and actionable insights to our end users. Our ideal candidate is: self-motivated, technically excellent at writing code, and passionate about delivering cutting-edge solutions.

You will:

  • Design and develop models and algorithms to enable and improve the service of the fulfillment network, including optimal inventory management and reliable delivery promises

  • Manage projects that measurably contribute to business goals, translating a business need to an actionable development plan and executing the plan successfully

  • Work cross functionally across Data Science, Engineering, Product, Planning and Operations to implement production processes and reporting to achieve desired KPIs

  • Communicate proposals and solutions to partner teams, customers, and leadership

  • Provide optimization, data science, and analytical expertise and serve as a mentor to junior data scientists and a subject matter expert to others in the organization

You should have:

  • Masters or PhD (or equivalent industry or research experience) in a quantitative field like Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Econometrics, etc.

  • 7+ years of industry experience in solving optimization and/or machine learning problems and developing practically efficient, automated solutions

  • Experience developing and maintaining end-to-end data science production processes, including data modeling, algorithm development, testing, and metric tracking

  • Strong project management skills, managing the following effectively: project timelines, deliverables, team accountability, and status updates amongst partners and key stakeholders

  • Proficient with Python and SQL. Experience with Snowflake, dbt, data visualization/reporting tools (e.g. Looker) preferred

  • A "compliance first" attitude to keep our regulators happy and enthusiastic about Flexport since we operate in a heavily regulated industry.

The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range displayed, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education and / or training.

The US base salary range for this position: (exclusive of bonus, equity and benefits.)

$201,330—$223,700 USD
